It is very common for men to experience incontinence (involuntary leakage of urine) after prostate surgery. Both a radical prostatectomy and a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) can lead to incontinence. Pelvic floor exercises can help with this condition, so it is important to learn to contract these muscles correctly and strengthen the muscles before and after surgery. Marpole physiotherapy offers biofeedback and electrical stimulation to further strengthen and retrain the pelvic floor muscles.

Another common condition specific to men is chronic pelvic pain, often referred to as “prostatitis.” Chronic pelvic pain can occur due to an infection, but it can also occur for no identifiable reason. Physiotherapy treatment for chronic pelvic pain involves correcting muscle imbalances (stretching and strengthening of hip, back, and pelvic floor muscles), biofeedback, pain management, relaxation and breathing strategies, and education on healthy bladder and bowel habits. Yoga and pilates for relaxation and core strengthening may also be helpful, once the acute pain has subsided.
